Haven't written for ages... haven't been feeling like it for ages.. neeways, here i am... Still no news from Petronas. Called them a few times getting the same answer. I dunno... but I've now got a volunteering job at the Petrosains centre KLCC. It's not a highly paid job but for a temp job i think it's most convenient being only a few LRT stops fro where i stay.

Hari Raya was good. First time celebrating with my family in 3 years. also, meeting old friends at various open houses was also very cool. a few of my friends have already married and have children(!) whilst some are still strugling with thier studies... I had not seen most of them for about 6/7 years so it was really cool to see how everyone compared to when i last saw them...

Up in Kelantan my grandad hosted a 'Family Day' for the relatives of his father. So there were hundreds of relatives i never seen before there!! Didn't really make friends cos as you all know Kelantanese people speak a strange barely comprehentionable language that i don't speak. So communication was quite a barrier but I was ok with the usual relatives i see quite often. Apparently my ancestors came from the south of Thailand quite recently. What is now the Thai provinces of Songkhla, Yala, Narathiwat and Pattani used to be part of the Muslim Pattani Sultanate. Back at those times Pattani payed trbute to the king of Siam and so did Kelantan. As a result of the Bangkok agreement with the British, the State of Kelantan was given to the British hence Kelantan now being part of Malaysia. My ancestors were probably Malay, but of what decent I'm not sure because of the loose definition of Malay (Speaks a malay language most of the time, Professes the Islamic Religion, Lives by the culture and tradition of the malays). adds to the mixture of heratige of what is already Javanese, Chinese and Minagkabau...

Ah.. enuf of that. Bought the VCD of the movie Puteri Gunung Ledang. To be honest i had high hopes for the film but was a bit dis apointed in that the story was VERY slow and the storyline quite simple. I loved the cinamatography though and the costumes!! it very well depicted the differing cultures of the people of the Malay archipelago. Would probably get myself to watch it again sometime maybe... also watched a Korean film called 'Fighter in the wind' about a korean dude that trains martial arts and becomes a really hard guy and beats all the Japanese karate-ka... it's based on a true story but after watching the film i read about the true historical facts of the guy and it was not as dramatic as the film but the main points are there and the outcome is true to history... highly recomended for martial arts fans!

Started skipping today after reading about it in a martial arts article. Apparently "it's one of the cheapest, easiest, and most readily available tools to improve your stamina, coordination, strength, balance, and all-around conditioning. It burns more calories than jogging and is great for aiding weight loss and full-body toning." So i did a lil bit today. I kinda agree with the article.. skipping is good....

Neeways, too lazy to write more... Working full 9 - 6 days tomorrow till Thursday. Enjoy the photos and have a good week everyone!!

Raya Aidilfitri!!!

The past week has been the most tiring since i came back to Malaysia.. Prepreation for raya has been rather last minute and quite a bit more than usual.. I guess that's the reality of being back in Malaysia. We really do celebrate our celebrations big. Else where in the world Eid is just a one day celebration but over here the festive feeling can still be felt month after the end of Ramadhan... Oh well...

Spent the last week sorting out stuff like Painting the house, re decorating parts of the house and since we were at it, mum thought we should do some spring cleaning around the house as well . The Peach colour we picked for the living room sometimes looks like a tad too pink at certain lighting conditions... sometimes it looks a more pleasing earth brown... light does effect how a colour looks..

Raya falls on Sunday the 14th here in Malaysia. So I'm off to my granny's place in Shah Alam tomorrow until Monday. The distance Shah Alam is from Kuala Lumpur (K.L) is probably similar to how far Manchester is from Leeds and add a LOT of traffic in between!! From monday onwards we'll be at my other grandparent's place in Kelantan, the farthest north eastern state in Malaysia, about 400 km from K.L. We'll probably spend the better part of the week there. Grandad has planned a big family gathering so I'm gonna meet loadsa people i don't know and most will be asking where i'm working?!! Don't have an answer to that I'm affraid!!

Downloaded a collection of Roxette's greatest hits video clips... Was quite a roxette fan when i was younger. Forgot some of the titles to some tracks though... Some of the songs bring back memories... you know how you can relate certain songs with events in your life, roxette songs do that to me... good stuff...

I'll be offline for about a week so i guess you guys won't hear from me till next week. I'm trying to reply all the emails i owe people before i leave but if i don't get the chance I'll get to it as soon as i get back. Lotsa life sorting out needs to be done when i get back... oh well, Selamat Hari Raya, Maaf Zahir Batin to all Muslim friends of mine, Esspecially you guys in Leeds!! Eid Mubarak.

Pos Malaysia

I had a very unpleasant experience with my local post office today.... I was supposed to send some 'Kuih Raya' and a few other stuff to my brother in the states. I reckoned there would be some kind of restriction on sending foodstuff so i seperated the foodstuff from the not and went to the post office. There's a number system at our post office so you don't have to line up, just take a number and find a seat... pretty neat until you actually get there and look at how many people are waiting!! Man.. it was a good 20-30 mins before my number came up. Lucky thing some one on the seat next to me gave up on waiting and left his/her number on the seat... saved me a good 10 places in the waiting list!!

When i got served, I was told that i could not send foodstuff to any of the english speaking westren countries, including the USA... but there was an acception for the US where you go on-line and get a number from the customs service there. I was not told what kind of number this was.. just a number and was told that i could obtain more details from the pos malaysia website: www.pos.com.my. So reasonably satisfied, i went home and quickly got on the net...

Much to my supprise.. there was jack all on their website! Nothing.. i was quite frustrated and 3 and a half hours later, after searching the USA embassy in Malaysia's web site, the US custom's web page, the US postal service web page and basicall all other possible combination of related words on google... Relief came from how ironic, the Royal Mail website... far more comprehensive and up to date than the Malaysian postal service's one. It had a comprehensive article on th new legislation, how to send foodstuff to the US and a link to the US FDA, the agency that caused all this havoc. Apparently it is due to the hightened risk of a bio threat to the US.. so food stuff must be screened first.. I'm not gonna poison my own brother am I?..

After reading the article on the legislation, it was clear that items sent as a gift to a friend or family member is exempt from this law.. Also, home made foodstuff that is sent as a gift to an individual is exempt too... I frustrates me that the pos malaysia guys didn't know much about this legislation... I had to spend 4 hours on the net to find out myself!! Neeways, the website had a link to the FDA website where I can obtain this number i was supposed to have before sending foodstuff to the US (according to the good people at my local post office). This number called a 'Prior notice' reference number basically tell the US guys that I'm sending so and so stuff of so and so weight on so and so time to so and so person... stick the number on the customs declaration form an Bob's your uncle! Quite simple and not as annoying as the pos malaysia people... I got the reference number straight after completing the step by step procedures...

Right.. done that so i headed back to the post office... by now it was almost 4 pm... the roads were getting busy and to make things worse, the Pasar Ramadhan was just opposite the post office... when i finally got there i took a number and it was almost heart breaking to see that there's about a hundred people ahead of me!! So i went to the pasar ramadhan and bought a few things and came back.. still 60 odd people to go so i went window shopping for about 20 minutes. Got back at the post office and there was about 30 odd ppl left ahead of me.. i took a seat and read my magazine that i had brought along with me..There is only one pick up time for the EMS pos laju mail from the post office each day and it was at 5pm every day... Imagine the dispair when the Postman came to pick the parcels up from the post office when there were only 3 people left before me!! Man was that a true test of one's paitience...

When it was finally my turn.. i was pretty restless by then.. I hate waiting... and when I got the same S**T from the postman guy about not being able to send foodstuff to the USA, almost lost it... but i kept calm and collected and kept on saying 'it's ok... it's ok...' Had print out from the Royal mail website and the FDA website in hand just in case he needed convincing... but it didn't get to that point and he only made me sign on a few extra places on the parcel saying that I have to take liability on sending the package.. probably a way of saving his skin if the package were to be destroyed by the customs... I was just wanting to get it over and done with.. spent too much time on a simple meager task such as doing the post...

If you're reading Adi.. You better appreciate all the time and effort spent to send you those kuih Raya when you eat them.. A really stressfull day with typical malaysian incompetence... to be fair, the superiors should have sent out memos to all staff about the new US legislation... most staff i found out knew little about the answer to this simple postal query. I am gravely saddened by the appalling service...

kesiannnn...ahaha.. selamat jek kitorg dpt kuih raya.. peacee Wed 10-Nov-2004 18:48

Terima kasih kerana menulis pasal prior notice ni. My sister went to 2 M'sian post offices, at 2 different cities kat S'gor. Each post office clerk refused to accept the package filled with kuih raya, they all kata kena ambik nombor. No mention to what this "nombor" is called and where to get this. My sister pun try to explain the kuih raya is for personal consumption and not for export, . No dice, I guess they all got the same memo from Pos Office Besar. When I called and asked for my kuih raya she told me kuih still kat at my mom's home. Just like you I searched the internet, cari kat website Pos M'sia and US Post office too. Then kat US Custom, Homeland Security, USDA, I looked everywhere. In my case I was looking for 3 days! Accidently I found your entry and you solved my problem! Rupanya kat US FDA. Thanks again. Now I hope I can get my dodol since I forgot to include that in my Prior Notice.

Raining

It's been raining very heavily lately... it has also been raining persistantly every day. alot of places in Malaysia have been affected by flash floods... luckily for the Kampung houses, they are built on stilts... not so lucky for us city dwellers... A few high profile land slides have happened as well.. some causing fatalities... makes us think how easy we fall mercy to the elements...

Flat tyre

Got quite an unwelcome wake up call at 7.20 am by a very distressed mum? Her car had a flat front left tyre and she actually drove about 10 ? 15 metres before actually noticing! Well? I had to drive mum to work as she has no confidence in driving our MPV. Driving mum to work means that I have to pick her up as well? good thing the traffic is quite good around her school (mum?s a teacher).

When I got back, I had the task of fixing the car ? ie. Replacing the flat tyre. I?ve only done this once before ? when I was in the US visiting my brother. Our hire car had a flat and we had to change the tire in the middle of the night and the temperature was 0 ? 5 degrees!! Chilly? but that car had one of those space saving spare tyres? easier to work with as compared to the full size one that mum?s car has!!

First thing?s first, I had to get the car back home first. I wanted to change the tyre under the shade of the porch and changing tyres in one?s home looks a lot les conspicuous. Getting the car home was a simple matter of pumping the tyre and driving home? pumping the tyre was quite a work out thanks to the constant loss of air through the puncture? there was clearly a puncture?

Got home safely and straight away got to work. I tell you changing a wheel is deffinately not a walk in the park.. A full size wheel is quite heavy, even with alloy wheels. Jacking the car up wasn?t as easy as I thought and the nuts were damn hard to unscrew and vice versa. But all in all I managed it with no major hiccups. But I was left with one question. Is the simple task of changing a flat tyre sufficiently easy enough for the lady drivers out there? I think my mum would?ve struggled had she had to do it herself. I used to frown on manufacturers that outfitted their cars with space saving spare wheels but now I?m starting to see the point?.

Inspecting the punctured tyre I saw the cause of the puncture ? a small fragment of steel managed to lodge itself into the type carcass. That rules out malicious motives for the puncture?.

I didn?t put the punctured tyre back into the boot where the spare usually goes. I thought it was useless lugging around dead weight. It?s amazing how much difference the car feels without all that extra weight!! The car is much more fun to drive now!!

Noticed that most companies in Malaysia wnt workers with at least one year of experience and some require more than that. Companies that usually take on fresh graduates are the big companies and multinationals. Unfortunately the Automotive industry in Malaysia is very much focused on services and manufacturing. very little R&D or actual engineering is done in Malaysia. Even if there were any, many employers will require a few years experience in a relavent field. So i reckon i should apply for graduate schemes abroad where the programs offered are very good but competition to get a spot is quite fierce...

Ah.. on the other side of things, I managed to persuade myself to apply for the graduate program that Lotus Group are offering. Took me about 2 hours to complete the application form on-line. There?s only about 37 places available so I?m not putting my hopes too high. The program is very good and they rotate you within different areas of the business every 4 months. The program runs for 2 years and is accredited by the IMechE. With Lotus having a subsidiary here in Malaysia I hope I manage to get into the Lotus family. Interviews are in Jan/Feb?

Everything else is quite normal over here...

Cars....

Not posted anything for a bit... Been rather occupied with little things lately. Also, been filling my time with some major TV series, most of which have started a new season this Sept/Oct.. good stuff... savour the moment when i can still afford to just sit back and watch back to back episodes of season 2 of Nip Tuck or The apprentice... not to mention Smallville, Startrek Enterprise and Stargate... all good stuff.

Recently got addicted to a program called 'the apprentice'. Some of your might have heard about it. Season 1 is on TV3 at 10.30 pm but i download season 2 so i kinda watch them both parallel to each other. It's about these billionare wannabes going through a 15 week job interview to get a job with Donald Trump, the largest real estate developer in the USA. The contestants are divided into two groups. Each week they're assigned a task and normally have 1 day to complete the tasks. the losing team will be called into the board room and one person from that team will be fired!! I know reality shows aren't really real.. but this one is really quite an intelligent one. Shows how people attack a problem and how they manage other people.. quite interesting.. that's what i look forward to every week! how sad...

Didn't realise how crap Proton's automatci gearbox is until i got into my mum's manual and really felt the difference eventhough the manual had a smaller engine... I'm not anti-automatic gearbox but for real driving pleasure, you gotta have a manual... nuf said. Great news for this week is that Proton has signed a deal with Volkswagen to assemble 2 volkswagen models to be sold within ASEAN. Good news cos Volkswagen makes really good quality cars and maybe by assemblying some of their models, Proton might learn a thing or two in the area of quality..

Ah... the Ramadhan pasars.. a once in a year thing but the one quickly gets tired of the crowdedness of such a pasar (Bazzar). People park anywhere they want more often than not by the sides of the roads thus impeding fluid traffic flow. When you get past that theres the pushing and shoving when you're in the actual pasar... Some of the food is actually quite good, you'd probably manage to find some if you actually bother to brave the crowd. I just buy the first thing that I come by... can't be asked to join the crowd.. One incident out side the pasar ramadhan...I had my parking spot 'stolen' by this dude in a daewoo!! I was just backing in to it and he just sped into the space!! Damn!! Cheeky sod. How i felt like putting a long scratch accross his car... but I'm not that bad and i have no time to complain so i just sped off somwhere else. that ordeal did cost me 10 - 15 mins though... what a waste...

Have a good weekend and for my fellow Muslims, Ramadhan Mubarak...

ramadhan pasars?
hehe.
we call em 'param'::pasar ramadhan

7th Ramadhan...

View all 7 photos...
7th Ramadhan. Things have been relatively good this Ramadhan. All the things that i wanted to do this Ramadhan I've managed to do so far... going to the mosque for Fajar prayers is something different. The air is so cool and fresh as compared to the 30 plus degree heat & humidity of the day. Quite refreshing...

I'm posting pics of the (almost) new offering from Modena. The Ferrari F430. It's been out a few weeks now and now i've found pics from sources other than Ferrari's website which provides only low res pics. Specs sound good. 0 - 60 MPH in 3.9 seconds. It features a new clever rear differential and new styling that is to my opinion the best of the new breed of Ferraris... It replaces the in my mind not so old F360 Modena which also means that the superb F355 will hopefully depreciate!! I wanna own one one day so hopefully by the time i have the money to buy one, the prices might have gone down to normal human being range... For now enjoy the pics of the new F430.

Also, someone sent me this via my old school's mailing list. If you went through life in the normal Malaysian curriculum I bet that you'd be able to relate immediately!! Friends from out of Malaysia might be able to relate abit i guess, but it's worth the read deffinately!! Here it is and have a good weekend everyone!!

' Those OLD days!! '

You grew up watching He-man, Transformers, Thundercats, Silver Hawk, Space Cop Gaban, Ultraman, and Mighty Mouse. Not to forget, Ninja Turtles, Mask
and Smurfs too. You grew up brushing your teeth with a mug in primary school after recess time. You squatted by a drain with all your classmates beside
you, and brushed your teeth with a colourful mug. Remember the days when the school nurse comes with a list for the dentist appointments, the sound of
the drilling when your friend has a fill in his tooth.

You remember the packets of milk (Projeck Susu Segar) and milo we get in primary school to encourage us to drink more milk. And when we had to line
up just to get one cup, and some of us would line up again for another cup of cold milo. And remember we use to buy susu sekolah and get stomach-ache
the next day. During primary (some KBSR & 3M) school days, the teacher will punish you using a long ruler to hit your palm. A bowl of noodle soup cost
only 40c in primary school days. When you were in primary school, girls like to go to the bookshop to buy cute stuff such as animal erasers,
sharpeners, notebook etc. Play with these paper doll... with all the paper clothes.. etc etc

In secondary (some KBSM) school, girls go to the library to borrow their favourite romance storybook. In secondary school, girls altered their school
skirt to shorten it and guys will go to the school appointed school uniform tailor shop to tailor make their school trousers to the then fashionable
"baggy pants" , or the GQ one with all the 'batik' or buckle at the edge of the pocket! the straight cut jeans.. or codroy... In secondary school days,
you buy the Bata BM Turbo school shoes. Some guys like to wear those china made ankle high shoes. Some even like to wear those very thick socks with
their school shoes. remember the panda, carefree or warrior shoes..

Internet? E-mail? What the hell is that? So you thought a decade or more ago. Your friends don't have pagers or handphones in school. CDs? What's
that? Cassette tapes were the norm. Movie tickets used to cost less than $5 last time. there is no KLCC.. Pertama or Bukit Bintang the only place we
have..

The goodies from Mamak shop used to be Mamee, Ka ka, Kum Kum, Ding Dang choco balls (with toys in the box) + the mat sentul voices as a jingle,
colourful hard "egg", "cigerette" chocolate, pink bottle of bubbles, and small tubes with yellow sticks to blow "more lasting" bubbles that you can pop more air in or slam it on. You never forget 'Ti Kam'. When exams are over, the board games (eg: UNO, Monopoly, CLUEDO) & hand held video games will be all over the class room. Girls will start playing 'batu seremban'. guys with 'tudung botol oren' Your favourite sound is the bell! For it's the homemade ice cream man. The cream that tops Haagan Dazs! The pink colour ice-cream with eyes plus a wide smile. Another bell is the recess bell, a time to get away from school work and to eat. Another time when there is no bell but all guys will anxiously wait for it...The PJ, PE time (time for football!!)

Your favourite childhood games were playing "guli"(marbles), five stones, zero-point, catching, and/or "Pepsi-Cola one two three"! The best thirst quencher of all times is the yummy colourful ice tubes you can buy from provision shops. To eat them, break the tab and suck while holding the freezing tube! All gals had barbie dolls, My Little Pony, pound puppy, Polly Pocket and etc, while all boys had star wars figurines or a rubber band catapult that shoots folded paper or eraser bits. Once was the era whereby
ice-cream sticks were valueable items, than came the paper aircrafts, chalk fights.

Everyone envied the class monitor and his assitant, cos they were the ones who came up with the daily duty roster, giving names to teacher on who makes the most noise and who's running around the class. The elite group are the prefects, the one with license to move around, they consider themselves above the law when not many students actually listened to them, and that's when the PK Hem comes in.

Some boys made their own guns from wood, and used 'Bacali' as the bullets. Some even used matches to shoot and burn kids'lanterns during Latern Festival.. and you also rather to 'ponteng sekolah' juz to watch final episod of Moero Attack .. miss that much.. summersault berkembar... hehehe.. still remember this one..

Cheers to the 80's babies... WE RULED THIS WORLD!

Ramadhan is coming...

The Muslim holy month of Ramadhan is just around the corner. Muslims in Malaysia are expected to start fasting this Friday. Kinda daunting as fasting in the UK these past few years has been relatively easy with the short days and cold weather (depending on how you look at it). I wonder how I'll manage...? Well... i adjusted to the heat and humidity quite well so I think fasting is just gonna be one of thoses things that you just get used to. Dad just got back from Uzbekistan. Told me how sad it was to see how 70 years of Soviet rule has eradicated their culture and faith... That's why i always am proud of who i am, my religion, culture and language. That is my identity and we should not loose it to westernisation (there was no soviet comunism in Malaysia).

Ah... on a lighter note. I'm please to say that I haven't lost my Graduation pics!! I couldn't find them anywhere on my desktop until i realised that they were all on my laptop!! Hope fully I'll upload some of them with this post. Spent the whole evening installing another Hard disk in my system (warning a few geeky, techy terms coming up). I thought that the twin 120 gig were able to keep me happy for a while but i do have 2 spare 80 gig hard disks and after sucessfully tweaking my ABC, my downloads are faster than ever. So i need some buffer space to put my downloads before i sort them out... I was really hard pressed forspace in my casing so i hadta move some other drives around and most annoyingly i had to take out the Graphics card and memory to do so!! Grrr... I need a new case!! I still haven't found the one i want here in Malaya yet. Might get younger bro to get me one from the good old U.S of A...

Neeways, for my muslim brothers and sisters, ramadhan Mubarak and hope this Ramadhan will be better than the ones before...

Mercedes CLK DTM 2000

The Merc CLK DTM.. only took 2 days to complete..
Chassis with roll cage and engine detailing..
Wheels on. Nice set of rims i reckon

My blogging/fotopaging habbits are begining to whither... None the less, I have been up to things lately. Most thing's that require me to type have been largely put on hold... I have tonnes of emails to reply and i still have that article to write. Better reply the mails before people start to stop mailing me.. !! I've been rather busy on the Leeds Taekwondo forum lately. Posting quite a bit on WTF style sparring. It's been 3 months since i left Leeds but i still feel very much attached to the things I left behind. For all you guys that are qurious, check our lil website out: www.luutkd.co.uk. click on the forum link at the top...

Ah... my plastic models... Bought 4 in total when i was in Japan. Gave one to each of my lil bros just to get them off playing computer games for once and hoping to introduce them to a lil engineering... I think it has worked a bit... not much tho. I bought a Mercedes CLK DTM 2000 car which is mercedes' entry to the german tourning car series. It was special cos it had a ready painted body which also saved me a lot of time!! Plus it looks gorgeous!! bought that for about 2000 Yen which is about 60 - 70 ringgits or about a tenner in pounds. that was the most expensive model i bought. Quite a bargain i think considering it had a ready painted body. Bought a ferrari 360 modena for myself as well and my brothers got a R32 Skyline GTR and the Nissan 350Z. I spent 6,321 Yen all together which is roughly RM210 or 32 quid. not bad i think for 4 high quality models. more time to spend sitting down and it also makes you sit in one place for a veerryy long time. Nevertheless, I've finished the Merc and have photos for you guys. I'm off to bed now but enjoy the photos and have a great weekend wherever you are!!

Proton

So tired today.. Went to KLCC and walked from there to City Square (next to ampang Park) just to find paint and cement (glue) for my return to plastic models!! Bought 4 Models when i was in Japan, 2 for my lil bros and 2 for myself. I couldn't believe how much has changed in that area and the hobby shop i used to go to when I was 13/14 is still there and the choice of stuff and the prices can beat the Tamiya shop in KLCC anytime!! Actually my back is aching from sitting on the floor for too long. No support for the back... Never have I sat in one place that long since the exams.. but that was sitting on a chair... Models are in the process of completion but I do realise I have loads more other things to do really than that....

How K.L has changed these past 10 years. I've only been living in Malaysia for about 10 years (not counting the years i spent at Uni) and the change i see every year is phenomenal. But it's good to see some things not change though...huh...

Proton... well.. they've released another model recently after the GEN-2, the Satria R3.. I think Proton is going at it wrong... They're image aboard is of a cheap car maker akin to the Koreans but the fact is, our cars are worse than the Koreans. Yet we still try to make our cars up-market and have sporty pretentions but the fact is the quality of the cars and the amount of Kit that you get for the money is everything but upmarket... Take the Satria R3, fit the car with bucket seats and racing harness and you can add at R3 badge to it... what is this..? trying to prolong the shelf life of an ageing car.?! The satria has been with us for over 10 years! the car it's based on has been around for longer!!

But I don't blame the engineers... rather blame the business guys at the top trying to make alot of quick money while proton is still protected under the government. It is the management that is to blame for all the quality issues. Also the vendors/suppliers of the parts... The plastics used are like the came from a pasar malam kid's toy and the way they're put together you'd think that someone just used double sided tape! Dad has 2 protons so I know all this.... And everyone who's got a Waja knows that the A pillar (the frame of the windscreen) restricts vision to the side.. a major design oversight...

Anyway, i hope with the coming Free trade agreement of the ASEAN countreies brings winds of change for proton... I'd like our car manufacturer to succeed... I'm proud to be Malaysian...
